Bringing At-Home Sleep Apnea Diagnostics to Life: Establishing Trust and Accessibility for Patients and Physicians
From August 2019 to March 2020, I led the reimagining of BioSens—a new player in the medical diagnostics space—by designing a credible, patient-friendly brand and digital experience for at-home sleep apnea testing. The objective: to build industry trust, empower patients, and enable BioSens to scale its impact in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
Deliverables: Brand Identity System, User Research Documentation, Responsive Website Design, Investor & Physician Marketing Materials
Project Type: Branding & UX Design for Medical Diagnostics
Timeline: August 2019 – March 2020 (30 weeks)
My Role: Branding, UX Design, Web Design, Information Architecture, Marketing Materials (Lead Designer)
The Challenge
Sleep apnea is widely underdiagnosed, in part because traditional diagnostics are intimidating, inconvenient, and often inaccessible. As a small startup, BioSens needed to overcome skepticism from both patients and physicians, and position its at-home testing solution as trustworthy, approachable, and effective. The core challenge was to create a brand and digital experience that would make BioSens stand out as a credible, user-friendly innovator in a cautious and competitive field.
The Solution
To tackle this, I led a holistic rebrand and digital overhaul—crafting a new visual identity and website that signaled trust, clarity, and accessibility at every touchpoint. The approach unified BioSens’s mission, values, and technology into a cohesive presence designed to resonate with both patients and healthcare professionals, while laying the groundwork for future growth.
Design Process
I focused on creating a research-driven, user-centered experience that would establish BioSens as a credible leader in at-home diagnostics. Here’s how the project unfolded:
01/ Research & Insights
I began by interviewing physicians and surveying patients to uncover barriers to adoption and trust. Competitive analysis of telehealth and diagnostics brands revealed that trustworthiness, clarity, and ease of use were essential to drive both physician referrals and patient engagement. Synthesizing these insights, I identified the need for a brand that felt both innovative and reassuring.
02/ Flow Mapping & Wireframes
Mapping out the patient and physician journeys highlighted friction points in information access and onboarding. I developed low- and mid-fidelity wireframes focused on simplifying navigation, streamlining the test ordering process, and ensuring that critical information was always accessible. Early iterations prioritized reducing cognitive load and making next steps clear for both audiences.
03/ Ideation & Visual Design
Logo and color palette explorations were tested for recognition and emotional impact with target users. The final visual identity balanced memorability with approachability, and the design system was refined to ensure consistency across digital and print channels. Typography and iconography were chosen for clarity and accessibility, adhering to healthcare best practices.
04/ High-Fidelity Mockups & Prototyping
Interactive prototypes illustrated the complete user journey—from discovery to test ordering. Usability testing with real users led to refinements in layout, content clarity, and calls-to-action, ensuring the experience was intuitive and trustworthy for both patients and physicians.
05/ Brand Rollout & Collateral
The final design incorporated a dynamic search page with robust filtering options and a modular wiki interface supporting multimedia content alongside user-generated contributions. High-fidelity prototypes were created to demonstrate the platform’s functionality and scalability.
Next Steps
With a strong foundation in place, the next phase would focus on deepening user engagement and expanding BioSens’s digital capabilities. Planned enhancements include integrating telehealth features for seamless collaboration, expanding patient education resources, and conducting further usability testing to refine onboarding and support features.
Round Up
This project demonstrates the value of research-driven, user-centered design in healthcare. By focusing on trust, clarity, and accessibility, I helped BioSens establish itself as a credible innovator in at-home sleep diagnostics—ready to scale its reach and improve patient outcomes. If you’re looking for a designer who can build meaningful, trustworthy experiences in complex industries, I’d love to collaborate on your next project!
