Knowing where to place your trust
I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life to have had some great support from the people that I hold near and dear to my heart. Unfortunately, the road to success is never a straight one, nor is it the same for every person. There have been times where I am not sure what to believe and who to trust, finding myself reaching out to that support system and still feeling lost, scared, and possibly even angry. These are the toughest hurdles but arguably the most meaningful ones.
Like any family, we went through some tough times as I was growing up but my parents, and my father in particular, never failed to reassure me that we would be ok. As an adult (so the US Census likes to call me), you run into times where you feel like you have nowhere to turn. Being able to rely on that support group is so important and yet sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough. “Breathe,” I remember telling someone I love this about a year ago when faced with a difficult situation.
I have to remind myself to do the very same everyday and to take a step back to make sure I am doing what is best for me. Every day I wake up, I have to remind myself what I am working towards and trust myself to accomplish whatever goals I may have set out to do. When I think about it, that’s been the hardest person to trust in my life, myself. As someone who likes to think that they are generous with their trust, it is something that is built over time and should not be taken for granted.
Taking that step back and being proud of my accomplishments helps me realize that I should trust myself, and arguably more than I trust anyone else. Now don’t get me wrong, if you don’t place your trust in others then the world becomes a pretty lonely place. But being able to celebrate your successes and use them to create more is an empowering feeling and one that I am learning to better use to my advantage.
